Don’t you just love those movies that make you forget about everything else, immersing you into the lives of its characters? I certainly do! Action, drama, romance, comedy, tragedy – all these things keep you glued to the screen focused on the plot twists and turns. And then it happens, a certain moment comes and you start sobbing right in the movie theatre surrounded by strangers who just happen to be sobbing, too. It’s the magic of the cinema that makes you have all these feels about characters that aren’t even real! If you like to get emotional while watching movies as much as I am, then this list is right up your alley. Here are 10 most tear-jerking movie scenes ever created.
The Lion King – Mufasa’s Death
Yep, I’m starting with some heavy stuff here. All 90s kids have grown up watching the amazing Lion King and it was impossible not to cry when you saw little Simba trying to wake up his dad, who wasn’t sleeping at all. And then he just curled near Mufasa’s body…it’s one of the most heart-breaking scenes ever!
Coco – Miguel Playing ‘Remember Me’
It is a perfect mix of happiness and sadness when in the end of the movie Miguel plays the ‘Remember Me’ song to Mama Coco and she instantly recognizes it and remembers her dad who used to sing it to her. All this despite the dementia! And then her daughter Mama Elena starts crying, and you also start crying because the emotions are just too much.
Toy Story 3 – The Furnace
The scene at the incinerator is simply heart-wrenching. When all the toys finally accept their fate and reach out to hold each other’s hands…Even Woody gives in and takes Buzz’s hand! It’s too emotional for words.
Up – First 5 Minutes
Pixar came up with a really beautiful and sad sequence for the first few minutes of UP. The characters meet as kids, grow up, fall in love with each other, dream big dreams, get married, grow old together, and finally the wife dies with their dreams still unfulfilled…It’s beyond sad!
Armageddon – Harry’s Death
It’s not the first and definitely not the last time Bruce Willis risked his life on screen to save everyone, but this time he actually sacrifices himself for the sake of mankind. Well, mostly his daughter, but mankind as well. His last moments in Armageddon are simply perfect – the music, his last words with daughter while everyone is listening, and AJ yelling that he loves him. It’s just a perfect tear-jerker!
Titanic – The Old Couple
Of course, the ending of Titanic is the ultimate heart-breaker, but there’s one more scene that will make you sob in no time. That old couple lying in bed, gently holding each other with love and care, while the ship keeps on sinking, water filling the rooms one by one. They’ve lived a long and fruitful life together and have accepted what was coming, happy to meet the end in each other’s arms. It’s just too much!
Green Mile – John Coffey’s Death
That execution scene in the end of the movie doesn’t need any introduction – if you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about, and if not, then you better watch this movie based on Stephen King’s novel and prepare a few boxes of tissues because it’s really tough! Yet beautiful and filled with some out-of-this-world magical mysticism.
Interstellar – Cooper Watching His Kids’ Videos
That moment when Cooper finally gets back from the planet not fully realizing just how much time has passed. He sits to watch all the video his kids have been sending him for 25 years thinking he was dead – the despair, the longing, the hope, and finally the acceptance that he is no more. Yet here he is watching all this! It is the ultimate definition of a heart-breaking scene.
La La Land – The Ending
La La Land surprised everyone with a non-stereotypical ending that went against everything a romantic musical stands for. Well, that’s what makes it so special! That part in the end when we see that the main characters didn’t end up spending their lives together is just half of it. When we’re being shown that they actually could have had everything they strived for and still be together – this is what makes it especially painful to watch! It’s just too realistic.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – Benjamin Turning Into A Baby
As far as fantasy love dramas go, this is the most beautifully made one. The ending is simply heart-wrenching! Benjamin is born as an old-looking baby and then grows up in reverse – getting younger and younger. The events of his life unfold, and through all of it there is a presence of Daisy, first as a young girl he makes friends with, then a beautiful young woman he falls in love with, then a woman who rejects him, then a woman who becomes his lover, and finally a woman that bears his child. As Benjamin’s life runs to an end and he becomes visually younger, he leaves Daisy not to traumatize her and his daughter. She gets married, but they reunite with Benjamin for one more night of passion when he visits her looking almost like a teen. The most tragic part happens in the end when Daisy is contacted by social workers about a pre-teen in poor condition with signs of dementia. She takes Benjamin in and cares for him until the very end when he dies on her arms… as a baby.
