In the modern world of chaotic rat race, we find ourselves in desperate need for a gasp of something bright, colorful and full of pattern. Meet Roeqiya Fris, a Rotterdam based, Dutch-Egypsian illustrator whose vibrant art will brighten up your life and soothe your soul.
Today, Roeqiya Fris is famous thanks to her stunning paintings where she skillfully combines floral and botanical patterns with fashion prints. Her art is largely inspired by Arab culture, nature and femininity.
When you look at her works, the first thing that catches your eye is women depicted as individuals or in groups. The artist explains this very simple. She grew up with three sisters and the women in her paintings are mostly inspired by them.
In one of her interviews, Roeqiya said that even after all these years, she and her sisters still meet up for lunch a few days a week to talk and share some childhood memories. There is a very strong bond between them and she cherish it more than anything in the world.
Roeqiya’s sisters are not the only people that inspire the talented artist. Among other figures, you will find Matisse and Rousseau. Roeqiya finds the way they use colors and patterns very fascinating. You can see some of the elements and techniques used in her art that she borrowed from them.
I don’t know about you, but when I look through Roeqiya’s works, I can see a lot of influence coming from renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The patterns, colors, female characters, everything. Roeqiya Fris certainly has her own unique style, but the influence is clearly visible.
Arabic culture is another very strong theme in Roeqiya’s art. Being partly Egyptian, Roeqiya spent a lot of her childhood traveling to Egypt. This gave her a lot of great memories that she now uses to create her beautiful art.
Those of you who are familiar with Moroccan culture will notice a lot of things native to this beautiful country, like brightly colored clothes covers or women carrying market baskets on their heads.
