Meet Dee Nickerson, a 60-year old rural artist from England, UK. Her beautiful art has been around since the 90s and gathered quite a following among collectors. A lot of her works were shown in various galleries around the UK and US. But it’s postcards with her designs that got the most recognition from the public.
Dee Nickerson wanted to be a painter since she was a little kid. So, naturally, she applied to the art school to study art. That was the time when she started thinking about establishing her own style. She got so nervous and upset about it that she turned to her teacher for help.
Needless to say that she didn’t need to find anything, she already had her style. Her unique, distinctive style was always there, it just needed more practice to truly develop into something truly amazing. Dee still believes it to be one of the most valuable advice she ever got in her life. She followed the advice and over time her work received the appreciation it deserved.
Today, her art is highly recognizable among the art loving community. A lot of her works could be found owned by private collectors.
When it comes to inspiration, Dee’s art is reminiscent of religious icons and regular people found in rural environment. The women in her paintings have big eyes and oval faces. Dee says they are an artistic interpretation of herself. Well, if you look closely, they do look like her.
Her artworks are full of dense well-visible details that make it look like she draws what she sees. We couldn’t be more wrong because everything we see in her paintings comes from her imagination.
Dee Nickerson’s art reflects a simple meditative life in rural England: knitting and sewing, cooking, long walks with dogs in the forest or on the beach. Most of her paintings depict women being on their own, in solitude, finding their own silence.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but Dee’s paintings kinda remind me of Goethe’s “Beautiful moment, do not pass away!”
